SIGNED GEORGIA BLIZZARD (1919-2002), SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE VASE, rectangular form featuring applied relief images, titled "The / Sacrifice", incised to underside, top featuring a woman laying on her back with a snake slithering across her legs and lizards flanking her, each side depicting Aztec-type figures in sacrificial ceremonial poses, and one end featuring a horned devil mask with protruding tongue. Signed "G. Blizzard" to underside. Dated 1995. 6 1/4" HOA, 12 1/8" x 6 1/2".

Catalogue Note: Georgia Blizzard was born in Saltville, Virginia in 1919. A self-taught artist, she began selling her pottery in the 1950s at her daughter's store. Her mother taught her the technique of pit-firing clay, similar to the way Native American's fired their vessels, also a part of her ancestry. As an adult Blizzard developed paranoid schizophrenia, which reveals itself in some of the sculptures and face jars she created.
