SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA WALNUT STEP-BACK CUPBOARD, two-piece construction, upper case with applied cornice above two hinged eight -pane doors set with period glass, flanked by applied vine-carved pilasters and fluted quarter columns, lower case with three short lip-molded drawers over two hinged raised panel doors, flanked by quarter columns, raised on ogee bracket feet. Replaced brasses in original drillings. Yellow pine secondary wood. Retains a refinished surface with warm color. Probably Shenandoah (now Page) Co., VA. Late 18th/early 19th century. 89" H, 49" W, 19 3/4" D.
Provenance: Descended in a Shenandoah Valley family collection.
Catalogue Note: Attached is an inscribed note "This cupboard once / belonged to the grand / father of Philip Burns / father of C.D. Burns of / Stanley, Va. / ? Lena M. Strickler / bought it March, 1899". Philip Burns (1810-1894) married Mary Ann Good in 1835, and they had a son Charles David Burns (1861-1908). Philip's father was Daniel Boone Bourne (1776-1832), who was likely the original owner of this cupboard.

Very good visual condition, restorations and repairs including proper right front corner of cornice, proper right upper door frame, hinge areas of lower doors, and feet, alterations to upper shelves, two breaks to panes of glass, scattered cracks to case.
