PARKER NEWTON (CANADIAN-AMERICAN, 1861-1928) NEW YORK CITY HARBOR SCENE, oil on artist board, depicting an Impressionistic view of various boats looking up the East River, featuring the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge in the distance, signed lower right. Housed in a 20th century gilt-molded frame with a gallery label for Pincus Art Shop in Brooklyn, NY. Circa 1910. 31 1/4" x 24 7/8" sight, 34 3/8" x 28" OA.
Catalogue Note: William Parker Newton was born June 4, 1861 in Toronto, Canada. According to a 1922 U.S. passport application, he immigrated to the United States in 1874 and permanently resided in New York City starting in 1888.
Newton was a painter as well as an illustrator, a writer, and an art critic for the New York World, working primarily in the northeastern U.S. and Toronto. His paintings were exhibited at the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, DC and other American museums during his lifetime. Newton died in Paris, France on May 13, 1928 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident two weeks prior.
