Celtic La Tene Bronze Fibula - Horse & Warrior

Item Details

Description

Western Europe, Spain, Celtic, La Tene, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. A cast-bronze horse fibula with a helmeted warrior seated upon his narrow back, and the stylized tail and slender neck are decorated with incised notches, openwork, and low relief circles. A ring attachment on his rear legs may have contained the spring pin, and a stylized anthropomorphic head finial protruding from the forelegs forms a square loop to function as the pin catch. This disembodied head has been interpreted as a trophy from a defeated enemy - this type of fibula was a popular style, undoubtably worn by warriors as a show of power. Size: 2.5" L x 0.3" W x 2.25" H (6.4 cm x 0.8 cm x 5.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
