Published by Farlag A. Gitlin Warsaw, [undated], 173, 6 pages. Soft lithographed cover signed by the artist lower left in the plate, 22.5 x 15 cm.
Condition: wear to cover – stains, crack, some damage to spine, tracks of mold near spine; paper yellowed.
Menachem Kipnis (1878 Ushomire, Ukraine - 1942 Ghetto Warsaw) was a well-known singer (a tenor) of Yiddish songs, a critic, photographer, and an ethnographer of Yiddish songs. From 1912 to 1932 he toured Poland, Germany and France, appearing in concerts with his wife Zimra Seligfeld in combined lecture - performances of the Jewish folk songs which he had collected and studied. He published collections of folk songs and songs for children, and was active in the Polish cantors' organization. In the 1920s a number of his photographs were published by the Forverts newspaper. Like many other Jews, he died from a stroke before the Germans and Polish Anti-Semits had a chance to murder him in a death camp.
