Keith Haring was an American artist whose art came from the New York City graffiti influences of the 1980s. His imagery has become a form of language unto itself. Many of Haring’s work had sexual undertones that turned into social activism by using the images to advocate change for safe sex and AIDS awareness. Haring took part in many different group and solo gallery exhibitions around the world over the course of his life. The Whitney Museum held a retrospective of his art in 1997. Haring's popularity grew from his times of spontaneous drawings in the subways of New York City, to the chalk drawings of different figures, dogs, and other images on blank advertising spaces. Haring created colorful larger scale murals, many of which were commissioned after gaining the public's attention. He produced upwards of 50 public pieces of artwork between 1982 and 1989, many of which were made voluntarily for hospitals, day care centers, and schools. During this time Haring opened the Pop Shop as an extension of his work. Much of his later work consisted of highly political and social themes, like anti-crack, safe sex, homosexuality and AIDS. Haring died on February 16, 1990, of AIDS-related complications. After his death, Haring was honored as one of the inaugural honorees in the Rainbow Honor Walk in San Francisco, a celebratory walk of well known LGBTQ people who have "made significant contributions in their fields." In 2019, Keith Haring became one of the first fifty American "pioneers, trailblazers, and heroes" to be inducted into the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor within the Stonewall National Monument in New York City.
