Princess Der Ling belonged to a respected aristocratic family in China with her father serving as a lord and diplomat in Japan and France. Der Ling was appointed Cixis first lady-in-waiting, interpreter for the Empress, and the young Guangxu Emperors English teacher. She was Empress Cixis favorite companion and so bestowed her the status of Princess. Der Ling was the first to give insight into the inner workings of the imperial court in China and supplied a kinder spotlight on the Empress previously seen as the “Dragon Lady.” This work, Kowtow is one of 8 autobiographies from the princess focusing on her raising and personal life in the Chinese courts.
