A Mesopotamian marble double 'eye' idol
Tell Brak Region, circa 3500-3300 B.C.
The plaque incised with two pairs of eyes, the body incised with zig-zags, indicating the limbs of two embracing figures, 6.2cm x 5.5cm

Such 'eye' idols are thought to be votive offerings. It is unclear whether the figures represent gods or worshippers, however wide eyes demonstrate attentiveness to the gods in much of Mesopotamian art. There is a similar double 'eye' idol in the British Museum, Museum no.126475.
