A rare Corinthian terracotta monkey with mortar
Late 5th Century B.C.
The monkey modelled with pierced nostrils and mouth, with applied ears, holding a pestle in his right hand, the left hand holding the rim of the spouted, knucklebone-handled mortar, with yellow painted body, red face and pestle, with white on the pestle and the base of the mortar, 5.5cm high

This is a finely preserved hand-made monkey with the original colour extremely well preserved, the mortar would have been mould made. A similar Corinthian monkey 'from Tanagra' cited below is depicted standing in the mortar holding the pestle in one hand and a cake to its mouth in the other. See the British Museum, Museum No.1903,0518.4., cf. R Higgins, Catalogue of the Terracottas in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities in the British Museum, British Museum, 1970, Vol.I, p.135, pl.958, text p.260.
