Description
A Roman pale bluish-green green glass juglet
Circa 4th-5th Century A.D.
The flared rim with half outward-folded lip, cylindrical neck and rounded shoulder, the body with moulded vertical ribbing, the pushed-in base with pontil mark, the handle formed in contrasting blue glass dipped into the shoulders, drawn upwards then re-attached to the neck and wound anti-clockwise to form six spirals on the upper neck, 10.5cm high
Footnotes:
Provenance:
Private collection, California, formed mostly between 1964-1986.
While the form of the body on such small juglets differs, the distinctive handles of both this lot and the small juglet in lot 111 in this sale, with a broken handle and trailed decoration, may indicate the hand of a single glass-maker. For a bluish-green glass juglet with a square body and blue trailed handle that continues as a thick spiral coil up the neck in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, assigned a Syro-Palestine origin and 6th-7th century AD date, cf. Yael Israeli, Ancient Glass in the Israel Museum. The Eliahu Dobkin Collection and Other Gifts, Jerusalem 2003, p.282, no.381.
