Sophie Dorothea (1687-1757) was the only daughter of Hereditary Prince George Louis of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who ascended the English throne as George I in 1714. Her marriage to the Prussian Crown Prince Frederick William I (the later ''Soldier King'') on November 14, 1706, led to the family alliance between the Hohenzollerns and the Guelph dynasty. Of the fifteen children with whom the marriage was blessed, five died very young. The longed-for heir to the throne, later Frederick II the Great, was born in 1712. Versatile, well-read and musical, Sophie Dorothea was a friend of the fine arts. With her, the young, musically gifted Frederick found understanding and often secret refuge.
