Note: John Toland's influential edition of the works of James Harrington was an important component in his project to introduce republican ideas to an 18th-century audience, and 'provided a foundation for the whig intellectual tradition that influenced Maximilien Robespierre, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Paine' (ODNB).
