Item Details
Description
Title: Autograph letter, signed from a racist lawyer, about a rumored lynching in West Virginia
Author: Wyatt, C.R., Attorney
Description: 2 pp. With original mailing envelope.Probably to his wife: “…a deputy sheriff called and notified me to go to the Criminal Court at once, as the Judge had appointed me to defend a black greasy coon, indicted for stealing. Think of the come down from living with one’s Sweetheart, to sitting by and defending a villainous “Nig”. The conductor on the train today told me that the Fairfax Negro had been lynched, that the Negroes were trying to burn the village and that yesterday a company of troops were sent to Fairfax on his train. I think he must be mistaken about the lynching as I could find nothing in the papers about it…”
