Introductory Note by Walter Lippmann. 71pp. Ex-library copy, rebound. First Edition. [New York, 1919].The first summer after World War I saw the worst American race riot of the early 20th century, which began when four Black youth entered a “white” beach, and led to four days of violence. The scarce Hoffman booklet, while intended as a political campaign vehicle for the Coroner’s re-election is, nonetheless, an important primary source of information on the riot, with 50 pages detailing the Coroner’s Inquest into the deaths of 23 Blacks and 15 Whites. The small Sandburg book, while de-accessioned from the Columbia University Library has an important association, the front board bearing the faint owner’s rubberstamp of Prof. E.R.A.Seligman, progressive New York economist, sometimes called “father of the income tax”, who was first Chairman of the National Urban League.
