Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Burma/Myanmar, ca. 19th century. A delightful and quite large wooden puppet or marionette. Each piece hand carved and articulated, so it is possible to move trunk, legs and head. Covered in dark brown stain and pink highlights. Entire piece conserved and restrung so it works quite well. Yoke thé is the Burmese term for marionette puppetry. Like most of Burmese refined art, Yoke thé performances originated from royal patronage and were gradually adapted for the wider populace. The Yoke thé are almost always performed in operas. Size: 30"L (76.2 cm) x 21"H (53.3 cm).
