Havell, [n.d., ca. 1832]. Original hand-colored etched plate from the 1827-1838 double-elephant folio edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America. Approximate size: 25 x 38 inches. A fine image of two Cow-pen Birds looking for worms on the ground. From the greatest illustrated natural history work to be produced in America during the nineteenth century. This plate was taken after Audubon's original life-size watercolor drawing. Plate slightly toned, with some mild creasing, some wear to upper margin (where removed from the binding), some minor soiling. Overall, near fine. From the estate of Scott and Stuart Gentling.
