Description
Poet's expenses.- Blackmore (Sir Richard, epic poet & physician, 1654-1729) Autograph signed order to pay to Thomas Williams & Abraham Anselme the sum of twenty five pounds, 1p., repaired tear, foxing, lightly soiled, 85 x 170mm., Strasbourg, May 1684.
⁂ Expenses during a tour of Europe. Blackmore is best known for his Prince Arthur, an Heroick Poem in X Books, 1695, which was a celebration of William III, and showed his support for the Glorious Revolution. His opposition to setting up a free dispensary for the poor in London was satirised by Sir Samuel Garth in The Dispensary, 1699, and he was frequently mocked by Pope for his delusions of grandeur and stupidity.
