⁂ An excellent group of association copies, inscribed to the writer Andrew Sinclair (1935-2019) and his wife and fellow author Sonia Melchett (b. 1928). Golding and Melchett had a lengthy friendship, Sinclair would later state that knowing Golding had been his greatest inspiration and privilege. Association copies of Golding's works are rare.
"William Golding was the only writer I have ever pursued. An Angry Young novel I wrote in three weeks when up at Cambridge, The Breaking of Bumbo, outsold Lord of the Flies that year for Faber & Faber. This was ludicrous, but it was followed by Golding's kindness when I wrote to him. He sent me an open invitation to visit him by the watercress beds at Bowerchalke." - Andrew Sinclair.
