IRENE (1900-1971) was born November 28. 1900 in Savannah, Georgia, the daughter of Kelly W. and Blanch Waite Price. She moved to Wilmington when a child. Her desire to paint portraits began before the age of twelve. She graduated cum laude from Trinity College (now Duke University), then taught French at Carolina College (1922-24), and later history at New Hanover High School. She gave up teaching to attend the Corcoran School of Art in Washington. D.C., for four years. For two summers she studied in Provincetown with Robert Brackman and Charles Hawthorne. She did not study with Elisabeth Chant, as many Wilmington artists did, because she was attending the Corcoran School of Art when she first knew her, but Miss Chant invited her to use her studio whenever she wished. She opened a studio on Market Street, then in the 1930's operated the Art Center on an upper floor of the Southern Building. One summer she had a studio at the Seashore Hotel on Wrightsville Beach. After this she moved to Raleigh. In 1937 she was made State chairman of art in the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs. She was voted into membership in the North Carolina Professional Artists Club in1937. For a brief time she had a studio at 700 S. Main Street in Winston-Salem, then moved to Blowing Rock, N.C. where she spent most of her painting years. She painted portraits of many prominent persons. among whom were Senator Simmons, Chief Justice Walter Parker Stacy, Justice Susie Sharp. Commissioner of Agriculture L.V. Ballentine. and the official portrait of Governor Luther Hodges and Mrs.. Rufus Hicks ("Mother of Sorosis·').Ten of her portraits are hanging and Duke University). She exhibited works of art at the Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina, the Piedmont Festival in Winston-Salem, the Southern States Art League, the Blowing Rock Annual, the Greenville Show of North Carolina Portrait Painters, Duke University, and the Mint Museum. Her first one-man show in Wilmington was at St. John's Art Gallery in March. 1966. She died in Wilmington in July, 1971, and was buried in Oakdale Cemetery. Sources for this biography were: Personal interview with Gladys Price Trundle (sister), Hester Donnelly, Claude Howell, and Margaret Williams. Obituary in the Wilmington News, July 24, 1971. Program of St. John's Art Gallery, March, Price was a friend of Elisabeth Augusta Chant who is partially responsible for encouraging and cultivating the art scene in Wilmington. Chant and Price both taught art classes in downtown Wilmington during the 1930s and went on to found and direct various programs and institutions while maintaining connections with some of the artists listed above. Simple though it may appear, the booklet shows the efforts of these budding artists to work with the community to foster a love of arts which we still see in our port city today.....................................
