French rugs are characterized by their spectacular knotted weave pile and soft pastel colors. French style rugs were heavily influenced by the convergence of Arab, Christian, Jewish and Berber populations on the Iberian peninsula. This rug is typical of French rugs notice how the soft yellow and green pastels and European-style vine scrolling contrasts with the rich red and geometric design of the center medallion. Far less ornate than other traditional styles of area rug, the relatively sparse design of this piece allows the eye to take in the fantastic color scheme.

A visage of luscious splendor, this antique French Savonnerie rug appears almost painted with warm color hues. The lightest cream in the middle field gradates outward through blushing pink, autumn reds and ultimately a rich red, drawing the eye to the exquisitely stitched bouquet filling the center. Rendered in complementary tones of pink, yellow, green and blue, a stunning wreath surrounds the centerpiece, all depicted with lifelike shading and jutting leaves on this antique rug. A golden border of arabesque shapes delineates the form of this medallion, and matching accents describe the shape of the larger field as well as creating complex flower-filled ornaments in each corner.
