'Nose to Tail', large studio art glass sculpture, signed and dated 2003 on the tail. This piece was bequeathed from a private foundation to Ringling School of Art & Design.Stephen Rolfe Powell was born in Birmingham, Alabama, studied painting and ceramics at Centre College in Kentucky, attended graduate school at Louisiana State University, and spent several years as an art instructor. It was during this time that Powell had his first experience with hot glass which became a full-time obsession. Powell is known for creating elaborately colored large glass sculptures incorporating murrine (patterns or images made in a glass cane that are revealed when the cane is cut into thin cross-sections).
