Born in the village of Granvin in the county of Hordaland, Norway, he lived and studied in Karlsruhe and Dusseldorf, including studying under Hans Gude, before moving to Berlin in 1888. During this time he would return to Norway every summer. Dahl remained focused on presenting works he believed could appeal and be understood by anyone, as opposed to only the highly educated and cultured elite.
