Gustav Klimt, the most famous Austrian artist of those times (Schiele's fame would be posthumous) and at the same time the most refined, complex and hermetic. Those were years when Vienna was beginning its decline as the world art capital, but Klimt shone for his style between Symbolism and Art Nouveau. While in "Judith I" Klimt painted the heroine from the front, looking at the viewer, for the second version, he preferred to show her in profile. With his body slightly tilted forward, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon and a serious expression on his face, he makes a sharp turn to the left. By portraying her in such a dynamic pose, Klimt may have wanted to establish a connection between Judith and another biblical event: Salome's dance of the seven veils. Salome was the daughter of Herodias. As a reward for having danced for Herod, and on the advice of her mother, she demanded the head of John the Baptist.
