Description
c.1930 Custer Car.The Custer car remains one of the most mysterious vehicles within the enthusiast community and this example may be one of the last still surviving after many years of resting in a shed where rust took over and pushed it toward oblivion. These photos were taken when the engine was out being rebuilt. Bottom center shows it in place.Levitt Luzern Custer was an inventor in Dayton, Ohio who was most known for his invention of the statoscope (an altimeter style device to determine whether a lighter than air aircraft was moving up or down) and the first motorized electric wheelchair. An associate of Orville Wright and an aviator himself, Custer formed the Custer Specialty Company and began creating devices for the aviation industry and also built vehicles used to move luggage and heavy materials around both airports and in defense plants.Custer found both electric and gas driven vehicles could be used in many locations and created smaller cars that could be driven both on the streets or within such places as a hospital. These micro cars also became amusement park rides, some used in bumper car facilities and some, such as a the Custer Car Ride located at Hersheypark, PA, actually provided drivers a fully functional vehicle powered by a single cylinder Briggs engine. Wheelbase is 56" with a tread width of 30". That ride was installed at the park in 1936 and functioned with an unknown number of cars until sometime around 1942.This Custer car has a very close resemblance to at least one of the two Custer cars that were built for the children of Edsel Ford who used them to drive around the Ford estate. Those cars are now on display at The Henry Ford Museum. This Custer car is completely driveable, its original c.1931 Briggs engine is now rebuilt and operating. All the components for steering and braking are in place. Brakes will still need some attention. It is an extremely rare vehicle and it's doubtful another exists exactly like this one as these were all hand built vehicles with no two exactly the same. Its size and simplicity make it a perfect candidate for restoration!
