The game was only allowed to be played by members of the Chinese imperial court but in about 1850 the general public was allowed to play the game but could only do so without calling it "Pe-Ling".This complete (as far as we can tell) set was offered by the renowned company Cardinal Mah Jongg in the 1950s/60s and comes in its original bespoke faux Python-skin textured leatherette hinged green case with two original keys!This stunning set has 162 ultra-rare green enrobed Bakelite tiles (this is when one color of Bakelite - in this case the white - is then dipped or surrounded in another color - the luscious Jade green wrapping that encircles each tile) with intricate painted designs in red and green.The set also comes with 5 brightly colored Catalin and Bakelite tile racks, two cherry juice Bakelite dice, 1 red and green Bakelite bettor, the original paper insert, and 8 official rules cards from the 1960s and 70s.
