Description
Made in 2nd quarter of 19th century, Connecticut. Silas Hoadley, 1786-1870 Plymouth, CT. This fine example has a bonnet with arched molded crest beneath three pediments alternating with scalloped cresting. The glass panel door in the bonnet is flanked by simple colonettes and joined to the case with molded corners. The throat has a molded panel door flanked by engaged quarter columns and is joined to the box base with mid-molding. The case ends in simple tapered bracket feet with a crescent shaped apron. The whole is an original beige painted wash. The wood face is decorated with floral sprays and a gilt rondel in the arch. The dial has Roman numeral chaptering with a subsidiary seconds dial above simulated time and strike apertures. Each within a gold gilt star. It centers a decorated rondel that is painted with a Patriotic eagle and American shield clutching arrows, all within a border painted “S. Hoadley Plymouth”. The dial is within painted spandrels of stylized red fauns flanked my mottled brown hills within a gilt triangular border. The weight driven movement strikes on a bell. PROVENANCE: This clock was from a private collection in Southern Vermont. SIZE: 87-1/2” h. Case is 18-3/4” w. Throat is 14” w x 10” d. Condition: CONDITION: Good. The sweep seconds hand is however absent.
