(1837-1908) Confederate brigadier general who served with Joseph E. Johnston at Vicksburg, fought in the Chickamauga campaign, and was captured after the Battle of Bentonville. Scarce A.L.S. as Bishop of South Carolina, 1p. 4to., Columbia, May 29, 1907 to the Rev. James Hooper in Connecticut concerning the 'commemoration of the establishment of the Church of England in Connecticut...my engagements are so pressing that I can not [honor?] the Diocese at that time...God has blessed the planting of his Church in your state...the little one has indeed become a thousand...' Fine.
