Notes: After serving in the Navy during World War II, Raeford Liles returned to Alabama and studied art at Southern College and Auburn University. Liles moved to Paris in 1949 where he studied in the studio of famed cubist artist Fernand Leger. The emerging abstract figurative artist had his first exhibition at Galerie 8 in Paris in 1951. The painting "Fish" reflects cubist influences of Leger and his preference for vibrant colors and expressive brushwork.
