Volumes 5 - 8, double Shadowboxed Collection of Italian Plaster Intaglios, second quarter 19th century, of various sizes, taken from ancient Roman gems in the Museo Vaticano, Rome, the book-like case leather bound with Florentine marbled paper covers. Made in Rome by Bartolomeo Paoletti (1758-1834) as a Grand Tour Souvineer. Bartoleomeo Paoletti was the most successful and well-known of the Roman purveyors of intaglio casts. He was succeeded by his son, Pietro Paoletti (1801-1847) who continued the workshop till his death. Each volume: 9 1/2"ht. x 6 1/4" wd. x 1 3/4" dp. Some missing tiles from each volume (refer to photographs).
From the estate and lifelong collection of William Garrett Hodges (1946-2014). Hodges was a Virginia-based dealer of fine arts, with specialization in prints and rare books, having collected for decades. He supplied and consulted various groups on antiquities throughout his career, including the White House, the Vice President's residence, the FBI, and multiple film and television series.
