Description
A Tall carved wooden dance mask with female effigy as top finial, embellished with various grass, seed, old glass beads and shell regalia and painted with organic pigments , apparent sweating surface suggests ritual use over many years. Dogon masks surmounted by female figures are called satimbe, commemorating a mythological woman who first discovered and wore a mask. The mask measures 37 x 11 inches. This mask does not include a display stand. Provenance: Ex Stuart Warkow 1996, NYC.
