Description
Nordic monarch (1829-1907) who reigned as King of Sweden (1872-1907) and King of Norway (1872-1905), during which both countries saw rapid periods of industrialization but a gradual decline of their union, resulting in a peaceful dissolution in 1905. Oscar is remembered as a patron of the arts and sciences, founding the world's first open-air museum at Bygdøy, commissioning a new opera house for the Royal Swedish Opera, and sponsoring the polar expeditions of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld and Fridtjof Nansen. ALS in Swedish, signed “Oscar,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, royal crest letterhead, September 30, 1886. Untranslated handwritten letter by Oscar II during his reign as King of Sweden and Norway. In fine condition. Accompanied by an outstanding original cabinet photo of Oscar II in his crown and regalia.
