Description
Late 2nd century A.D. A terracotta oil lamp composed of a circular discus with tapering sidewall, D-shaped nozzle with sub-circular filling hole, series of raised roundels to discus, pellets within arcading to the shoulder. See Bussière, J., Lindros Wohl, B., Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 2017, p.258, no.368, for the type. 74 grams, 10.5 cm wide (4 1/8 in.). Found Colchester, Essex, UK, in the 1800s. From a 19th century collection and latterly in a London collection. Accompanied by a small original handwritten card: 'Found in second bra-(?) at Colchester'. Loeschcke type VIII is characterised by a circular body and short rounded nozzle, the early examples of which go back to Claudian times. It experienced a tremendous floruit at the end of the 1st century A.D. and during the next two centuries, with variants around the Roman provinces. This variant is characterised by closely spaced tongues on the shoulder, separated from the discus by a series of circular grooves.
