Item Details
Description
3rd-4th century A.D. A sub-rectangular redware vessel fragment featuring a wild boar, together with the bust and a sword-wielding arm of a Bestiarius in raised relief; modern suspension loop to reverse. Cf. Gilbert, F., Gladiateurs, chasseurs et condamné á morte, La Capelle-Marival, 2013, pp.86-88. 169 grams, 13.2 cm (5 1/4 in.). Acquired 1960s-1990s. Late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister. The wild boar was often hunted in the circus, especially by the venatores (hunters). The boar's strength and ferocity made it a primary opponent for these fighters, as when angered, the boar was able to gut a man or his dogs. The armoured sleeve visible on the fighter’s arm could also suggest that the beast’s opponent is a gladiator, as on a bronze medallion from Köln. [No Reserve]
