19th c. Softwood Standing Female Figure with Eagle, possibly depicting Hebe, daughter of Zeus and Hera and the Classical Greek goddess of youth and forgiveness, with the eagle of Zeus at her feet; she is modeled with flowing hair, bare breasts (in the 19th c., semi-naked female figures were believed to calm storms at sea), her left arm raised upward, and with a floral swag draping her shoulder; a diminutive figure in remarkable condition, mounted on a rectangular wooden base, figure only: 29" high, overall: 30 3/4" high, 11 3/4" x 8 3/4". Stripped natural wood finish; losses to eagle legs and feet; old repairs, including re-attached right arm, left hand and foot.
