Description
Tabernacle of the Virgin and Child with Two Cherubs, Christ of Sorrow above in the lunette top, relief in painted stucco housed in a contemporary frame of gilt and painted wood, having gilt haloes, original hanging iron. Last half of 15th c.46" x 28" x 4 3/4". Repaired and retouched.The composition of this stucco is widely inspired, as Dr. Ursula Schlegel, Curator of the Sculptures Dept at the Staatliche Museum of Berlin, Dalhem, has kindly pointed out, from a prototype attributed to Donatello. (P. Hennessy - Catalogue of the Italian Sculptures in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Vol III, page 80, n 64, Madonna and Child, terra cotta relief. Other versions of the same composition are in the Museo Bardini, Florence.
