Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was an influential modern artist best known for founding the art movement Art Brut, a French term that translates as 'raw art' to describe art such as graffiti or naïve art which is made outside the academic tradition of fine art. Dubuffet had an expansive and influential career throughout the 20th century. Today, his pieces can be found in collections around the world, including those of the Pompidou, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, the Museum Ludwig in Germany, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere.
