Stunning Jan Chelminski Signed Pencil Sketch of Napoleonic Hussar, 1917
A pencil sketch of a Napoleonic Hussar, signed and inscribed by Chelminski, "á Mademoiselle Yvonne Bonaventure/Souvenir de 1917. Jan V. Chelminski". 7" x 9.25", n.p., dated 1917. The sketch is very similar to Chelminski's painting of Polish General Józef Poniatowski. This page has clearly been removed from a larger sketchbook, with a slightly rough left edge. Light edge toning but boldly signed. Very fine.
Jan van Chelminski (1851-1925) was a Polish artist who specialized in historical works, specifically military history and the Napoleonic Wars. Chelminski studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and worked throughout Europe before moving to New York in 1895.
