Description
A small lot of Civil War dated slave-related cartes de visite, three pieces. Sepia-colored albumen photos mounted on cards. Expected wear including toning as well as isolated foxing and wrinkles, else very good to near fine. The smallest measures 2.375" x 3.75" while the other two measure approximately 2.5" x 4."
The items include:
1. "The Colored Volunteer" after Thomas Nast (1840-1902), ca. 1861-1865, signed in stone at lower right as "Th. Nast" and with its title printed along the bottom margin. An isolated area of damage and repair found near upper left, affecting the boy's right eye, else near fine.
2. "The Baggage Train" after Winslow Homer (1836-1910), ca. 1863-1865, as part of "Campaign Sketches" originally published by L. Prang & Co. Signed in stone at lower right as "Homer." The back stamp reads "Published by / F E Thurston" verso, with the title (misspelled) appearing below. Partial pencil erasures near the top.
3. Untitled, published by J.A. Arthur, ca. 1865. The scene depicts newly emancipated slaves celebrating in the slave master's abandoned house, ca. 1865. The artist's name, signed in stone at lower right, is difficult to read. Copyright information is printed along the bottom margin. Pen inscribed "Will H. Cornwell / Atlanta / Geo" verso. One Will H. Cornwell was affiliated with the Ebenezer Methodist Church of nearby Conyers, Georgia. Trimmed at bottom, and with a diagonal wrinkle near the center, else near fine.
