Native American, Midwestern United States, Ohio, Marion County, Archaic to Eastern Woodland, ca. 1000 BCE to 1400 CE. A collection of 3 pottery and stone artifacts - a pottery anvil and 2 spherical balls used as pestle grinders or game stones. The anvil is a mushroom shaped implement used by potters when building pots via the coil method, the rounded anvil head would be held inside against the soft wall to retain the shape while the outside was scraped smooth, enabling strong but thinner walls. Size (largest ball): 2" Diameter (5.1 cm)

Provenance: Private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection, Ex. John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970's and earlier.
