Description
Follower of Anthony Van Dyck (Flemish 1599-1641), 18th century, oil on canvas, bust length portrait depicting Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke and 1st Earl of Montgomery, KG, KB, PC (English 1584–1650) wearing a jeweled chain and sash of the Order of the Garter with lesser George and holding the wand of office of Lord Chamberlain, apparently unsigned, paper label en verso and notation of the past restorer, in period carved giltwood and gesso frame. Note: A larger piece of similar composition is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Sydney, Australia. Approx. canvas h. 30.25", w. 25.5"; Overall h. 37", w. 32.5".
Condition
Canvas has been lined, craquelure ripples to surface of canvas, scattered inpainting and varnish has darkened with a hazy green layer visible under ultraviolet light, damage to frame, frame is associated.
