PROVENANCE:
From the Estate of Gerrik Baters, Jr. of Cartersville, GA (1928 - 2020). Veteran, Accountant, Private Collector. After several attempts he found success and a path towards a new career. He also was surrounded and fascinated by the ornate porcelain pieces that she had collected over the years. Learning the history, studying the marks and identifying certain aspects of these items became his passion. His friends called him the professor of Porcelains. While his knowledge has passed with him many of his treasures are left behind.

Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, WanLi wucai dragon motif porcelain lidded box. Lidded trinket box cast into shaped rectangle body, thick potted, slight dome rim straight to wide opening rectangle, Flange circumscribed around the containers lip allows for a perfect fitment of the covering with double fine blue thick rings lines on the each rim. All reserved in hand painting ornamentations, rendered in clean white under glazed ground color which contrast against the wucai design color. WuCai or five-color shades and tones, brightly painted in WuCai design, Opaque colors around the exterior, between the filling motif decorated in colorful vivid sgrafitto ground of uptala. The dome lid and the lower body adorned with snarling huge imperial five claws dragon careening through cumulus clouds above thrashing Li-shui waves in a blue and red color dragon squama rounded the bowl to chasing flaming pearl amidst flames and vapor. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity, the Li-shui wave pattern which is known to be the abode of dragons. The foot rim reveals the cut edges during the making process, and the base left unglazed with grayish creme-brown ground and dark spots of firing marks. The underside unglazed, revealed the pale-creme groundand dark grayish brown spotted firing marks and edge-cut foot rim. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned. Mark on lid rim, a six under glazed blue script characters reign mark, WanLi Reign Period of Great Ming Dynasty.
