This painting will be included in the forthcoming online catalogue raisonné of Anne Ramsdell Congdon's work being prepared by the Nantucket Historical Association.

Anne Ramsdell Congdon's Nantucket, Massachusetts is an exceptional example by the artist that delightfully exhibits her mastered mature style widely celebrated today. Painted with strong shadowing and sweeping blocks of color, Congdon has painted a view of town, possibly from Monomoy. The bell tower of the Nantucket Unitarian Universalists church and its iconic gold dome soar above town and the surrounding landscape, which Congdon has characteristically utilized vibrant colors and a heavy impasto to describe. Congdon's painted views of Nantucket offer beautiful interpretations and unique recordings of the island's landscape during the early-to-mid-twentieth century and are highly prized by the island's locals and visitors alike.

The present work was previously in the collection of David Gibbs Lloyd (1934-2009), who wrote some of the most memorable television sitcom scripts of the 1970s, '80s, and '90s for such shows as, The Bob Newhart Show, Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Wings, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show for which he had more than 30 episode credits and awarded him the Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series in 1975. David and his wife, Arline W. Lloyd (1934-2022), were art enthusiasts and Arline dedicated thousands of hours as a docent at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 1958, the couple wed and spent their honeymoon on Nantucket and the island remained a special place for them throughout their lives together.
