Description
French school of the 18th century.
"Flora and Zephyr.
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Regency style frame, ca.1900.
Size: 102 x 81 cm; 117 x 97 cm (frame).
Flora, goddess of the spring, appears seated with her chest uncovered. Next to her is Zephyrus, who in Greek mythology embodies the west wind, the messenger of spring, represented under the aspect of a little love, with childish features and butterfly wings, holding a crown of flowers that he places on Flora's head. Flora was abducted by Favonius or Zephyrus, who took her as his wife when he abducted her. Stylistically, this canvas can be related to the painting of Antoine Coypel, a French Rococo painter who worked for the Duke of Orleans.
