Roman Marble Head of a Goddess
Roman Marble Head of a Goddess
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A delicately sculpted head of a young woman that is tilted slightly to the left. Rounded cheeks, almond shaped eyes, and a diadem crowning the head elude to an idealized woman with the stature of a goddess, possibly Proserpina (Persephone), a goddess associated with harvests and the bride of Hades. The hair is swept back to a knot at the back of the head with tendrils hanging down the nape of the neck. The middle and side parting of the plaited hair is clearly defined. This sculpted head is a graceful vision of a woman with beautiful and youthful features associated with the gods. Size: 1.5" W x 2.25" H (3.8 cm x 5.7 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

#157316
Condition
A fragment from a larger statue, but quite nice. Expected age wear to visage. Nicks to periphery of diadem, missing nose, abrasion to chin and high pointed areas. However, certain features are still discernable as shown. Surface graced with deposits. Overall, a lovely example excellent preservation of plaited hairstyle.
