About This Lot
Considered the forerunner of Pop art, Alex Katz’s simplistic portraiture and renderings of the American landscape are easily recognizable by his use of flat color and the reduction of line. Katz began creating landscape-focused works in the 1950s and ever since that time, natural imagery has become a frequent and popular theme in his oeuvre, as seen in this aquatint Daytona Beach 5. Part of a series of 5 works depicting the same image in various ocean tones, this work exemplifies Katz's ability to synthesize a kind of color field abstraction with realism. With just a few streaks of white against the blue-green background, he captures the essence of the California ocean and the serenity of the waves.
