"Pappy" Carter, the last listed liaison pilot in the U.S. Air Force. M/Sgt Carter, USAF, Ret. graduated from the Marshall school of flying in Marshall, Missouri, in 1928 with 10 hours of flying time. His first airplane was an old Canadian Jenny, (WW1 surplus) which a friend cracked up after Carter had logged less than 40 hours on the crate. He tried to join the Army Air Corps but was denied because he lacked a high school education. He went back to school and did aerial circus and stunt acts in his spare time, even making exhibition parachute jumps at the Penn Harris Airport close to the school. Joined the Air Corps in 1936 as a mechanic and was sent to Nichols field in the Philippines for duty with the 28th Bomb Squadron. After 3 years he was sent to Langley Field, Virginia. While there, he married Blanche Frostick of Richmond who owned an Aeronca Chief. In 1942 he was stationed at Charlotte NC and then obtained his Pilot (Liaison) rating at Ellington Army Air Force Base in Texas. Was stationed at various locations until he was assigned to the Hawaiian Islands with the 163rd Liaison Squadron attached to the 10th Army Headquarters at Schofield Barracks. Was then assigned to Okinawa after the invasion where he flew artillery spotting missions. He was wounded while piloting a L-5 and carrying a Marine Lt on a spotting mission. Awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross). After the war was assigned to various bases and retired later to Greenville, SC.
