Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona or New Mexico, Hopi Peoples, ca. 20th century CE. Inscribed "ONE WHO ENFOCES [sic] / L'WAIN" on base. A haunting wood kachina doll known as Soyoko or Soyok Wuti, the monster or ogre woman, a member of the Soyok or ogre kachinas who enforce good behavior among children. Skillfully carved, she is depicted traditionally here with long, straggling hair, glaring, annular eyes, and a wide mouth. Her body is enveloped in a blanket and skirt as she threateningly raises her right hand, displaying a whip. Size: 3.9" W x 12" H (9.9 cm x 30.5 cm)
