The gilt over red lacquer carved wood Buddha seated cross-legged on a carvedwood plinth, the covering cloth draped over one shoulder, poised in Dhyana mudra with the righthand at his side, pointing to the ground, with palm facing inward towards the Buddha, the lefthand on his lap holding an alms bowl, highlighted with multi-colored glass insets. Height 34 in.,Width 29 in., Depth 22 in. Cf. The most common pose found for Buddhas in Thai temples, as on the offer lot, and on otherBuddhas in this sale, is with the left hand in the lap, and the right hand pointing to the groundwith the palm facing inward toward the Buddha. This posture is known as, “Calling The Earth toWitness”, and it is the definition of the moment of enlightenment for the Buddha.
