Tipperary, who was later (in 1816) created Viscount Cahir and Earl of Glengall, all in the Irish Peerage. He was the son of James BUTLER (died 1788), 9th Baron Cahir, by Sarah NICHOLS and in 1793 married Emily JEFFERYES. After the Act of Union in 1801 he served in the English House of Lords as one of the 28 Irish representatives peers.
