Item Details
Description
Up for auction is a rare signed, limited edition of Nobel Prize winner George Bernard Shaw's (1898- 1943) short story collection The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God. The book was published by Constable & Company Limited of Orange Street, London in 1932. This is a presentation copy and is inscribed and signed on the title page "To Sydney Cockerell From Bernard Shaw". The book was designed and engraved by John Farleigh. The book is in near fine condition with only a slight chip to the lower spine and shelf wear to the cover's edges and tips, see photos. The spine and boards are tight and straight. There are no internal markings, other than Shaw's signature. There is a small sticker inside the front endpaper paper and a Philip Cl Duschnes Rare Books sticker on the last page of the book, see photos. This is a beautiful copy of this extraordinarily production by Shaw. Sydney Carlyle Cockerell (16 July 1867 - 1 May 1962) was an English museum curator and collector. From 1908 to 1937, he was director of the Fitzweilliam Museum in Cambridge, England. He built up the Museum's collections of private-press books and manuscripts, prints, drawings, paintings (including Titian's Tarquin and Lucretia ), ceramics and antiquities. It was he who secured the Museum's rich holdings of works by William Blake and who bought its first Picasso print. Cockerell appears as one of a circle of three figures in the book by Dame Felicitas Corrigan, The Nun, the Infidel, and the Superman , with Dame Laurentia McLachlan and George Bernard Shaw. -Wikipedia
